Unit 3 - Proposal

BYU – Idaho,
180 Rigby, Rexburg, ID 8340
Dear Mr Christensen,
After reading the brief that Spori productions created. I have come up with an idea that I think could be great for a new magazine. I have been doing research and have come up with an idea that could be different. I have written a proposal telling you all about the new magazine everything from funds, to appearance.
The magazine that I want to create is called ‘LWM’ which stands for Ladies weekly magazine. This is a short catchy name for a magazine and it will stand out as it is going to be bold writing.

My Objective –
LWM is the new weekly women’s magazine and they are trying to fill the gap in the market. The main offices are based in New York, Manhattan. Their main objective is to be the perfect guide on how to be a perfect lady and for women to come out of there comfort zones and try different things, beauty tips, gossip and styles.

Concept -
LWM offers the latest ladies fashion and styles and write about celebrity gossip because what girl doesn’t love to read about the latest gossip. Each issue of LWM will include an interview with a different celeb such as Blake Lively, Kendall Jenner and Emma Stone. The magazine is an affordable magazine for women that will come out every week on a Wednesday and will be distributed mainly in Manhattan. The main theme of the magazine is women and the latest fashion and trends but also guides and tips about day-to-day life of being a woman. The magazine will have a section at the back of real life stories that have been sent in from ladies all over the world, their stories could be about anything varying from weight issues, to marriage or even just to their jobs and lives.

This is a rough copy of my Masthead. My font is going to be big, bold capital letters so that they are noticeable and eye catching. My colour scheme is red, black, and white so I decided to do most my masthead red as it is the brightest and is the most noticeable colour. Red is also a colour than can sure everyone. Straight underneath the big LWM I have written what those letters stand for. The writing is a smaller black swirly writing.

Audience and why?
The primary target audience of LWM is women ages 18 to a 30. We have a big range of age for our target audience because LWM can relate to all women from these ages. Most women have the same kind of interests which will all be included in the magazine.
Our secondary target audience is younger teenage girls ages 13-17 because teenagers can also relate to fashion styles and learning how to be a woman. Teenage girls are at the stage in their lives when they are trying to find out who they are as a person and this magazine could help as there are many guides on how to be a woman and how to find yourself.
Thirdly, we also would like to appeal to women over the age of 30. Women ages 30-60. Older women may not necessarily be that interested in the latest styles however it could create them to have more of an open mind about the modern world and styles.
Research
Situation –
LWM felt that there are many guides and tips online about how to be a perfect lady and giving advice on different topics such as how to be a good wife or how to keep fit and have a healthy diet, but felt that there weren’t many magazines that focus on giving women advice and tips on everything combined in a girl’s life. Each article will contain different information about different matters. Anyone can email into head offices about things they would like to see and read about in the magazine. When women try new thing’s they may be scared and not know what to expect, which is why this magazine comes in such good hand. It will tell them exactly what to expect in new situations. Our magazine is different from any other typical gossip magazines because we aren’t running a magazine for the gossip, we are doing it for helping women get through life with a boost and a good few tips to help them along the way. We also talk about high end clothing and why people like it, and for people that may not be able to afford high end we also talk about normal high street clothing and give tips on good places to go and things to buy.

Appearance –
LWM will be an average sized magazine that will be eye catching to the target audience and will be the perfect size to slip into a women’s hand bag. The colours will be bright and bold. The three colours will be black, red, and white. LWM has chosen these colours because they are bold and eye catching and can suit to all women. The magazine will be easily recognised and the writing will be big bold text. There will be three sections of the magazine.
1.      Fashion and style
2.      Gossip and news
3.      Lifestyles and tips
Each section of the magazine will be a different colour. Fashion and style will be black pages, Gossip and news will be red pages, and lifestyles and tips will be white pages. This will be done to separate each of the sections making it easier to find the start of each section. The colours will be used because they match the colour scheme of the magazine. The magazine will be printed on a glossy magazine paper that looks presentable and smart. The magazine is a smart magazine as it is sold in Manhattan and will be seen by people all the time.

Funding
This magazine will be funded by the company at first and depending how popular the magazine gets, sponsor’s and advertisement from local companies that can relate to the article will help pay for it. For example, clothes shops, beauty care shops, Sephora (make up shop) can all sponsor and have adverts put in our magazine which will help pay for the magazine and the extras that are needed to make the magazine as popular as possible. Local resident that subscribe to the magazine can have it sent directly to their homes.

Strengths –
One of our main strengths is that we give advice and tips about everything from fashion to general life issues.  Few magazines give actual advice they just write about the usual day to day fashion expectations and rules. We give guides and advice on things that our readers want to read about. Our email scheme enables us to understand what most our readers want to see. We also are being sold at a reasonable price at £2.50 per magazine. This price is in a reasonable price so that more readers can afford to buy it. We also include a free makeup or perfume sample in many additions. We do this because it will always out a smile on a women’s face seeing a makeup or perfume sample and we want to make our readers as happy as possible and for them to enjoy reading our magazine. One of our pages inside is all about feedback and how our magazine has helped them.

Weaknesses –
As a new magazine, few people know about us and we aren’t one of the most popular magazines yet and hopefully we will gain more readers and lovers of LWM. Also the majority of people prefer to read online and we do not have an online addition yet but we are currently working on trying to create an online addition as well as our paper copy. A lot of women are scared to try new things and the whole point in our magazine is to help ladies come out of their comfort zones and try new things. Hopefully our aim will work and our advice and tips will work but it may take time to get ladies to come out of their own zones.

Opportunities –
If we eventually create a magazine that people subscribe too and read every single week, they will start treating the magazine and the advice we give to them like a friend and will go to the magazine regularly for advice. Trust will start to happen and women will start feeling better and more confident in their new comfort zones. If our magazine gets bigger and becomes more popular more people will want to read it and advertisement will become better. Bigger fashion companies will want to be advertised. Once a year we will hold a
Competition –
There are so many different fashion and gossip magazines in New York today which mean the competition is tough and there are a lot of magazines that are very different. An example of a fashion magazine in America is Essence, Nylon, V, Teen vogue, W. These magazines are American fashion magazine that could cross paths with the LWM because we also have aspects of fashion.

Teen Vogue is one of the most popular teen fashion magazines. It is competition to our fashion side of the magazine however their target audience is just for teen agers whereas our target audience is a wide range of ages. We also include other things we aren’t just a fashion magazine.

Nylon magazine includes sections of fashion and beauty when our magazine is a mix of everything in a woman’s life.

W magazine Is based around fashion, beauty, celebrities, and all of the latest gossip. W magazine could be a big competition for LWM because they are one of the few magazines that are a mix and talk about everything.
Marketing plan –
1.      Marketing statement
2.      Marketing objective
3.      Marketing strategy
Marketing statement –
LWM is committed to the lives of Women living today in our generation. LWM want to help and give all the advice possible to the women living in New York, giving fashion, beauty, and general life tips. The intention of the magazine is to be easily accessible, easy to read and so that it fulfils the needs of women who are reading it. We want our readership to get bigger and bigger and to keep growing. Our goal is for the Women of New York to come together and join as a community so that our advice has helped to the best of our ability.
